Every spring, Hong Kong becomes notoriously humid. Clothes take ages to dry, walls can grow mould, and floors may even accumulate moisture. This persistent dampness frustrates many, but what can be done to prevent mould and reduce humidity in the home?
Many Hongkongers enjoy living in sea-view apartments, but waterfront properties are often hit hardest during humid seasons. Tseung Kwan O, for instance, is frequently referred to as a "humidity hotspot." To tackle humidity-related damage, homeowners should start by addressing the issue during renovations, followed by the use of proper equipment.
During humid weather, floors can easily swell or become damp. To combat this, it’s recommended to install composite wood flooring. Made from three or more layers of wood arranged in a cross-grain structure, composite flooring is more stable, less prone to warping, and highly resistant to moisture. It’s also reasonably priced.
For those who value aesthetics, seamless flooring is a popular choice. However, it’s less moisture-resistant compared to traditional flooring. In humid environments, seamless flooring can swell, darken, and, in severe cases, even deform over time.
Floor waxing is another effective option. Once the wax hardens, it forms a protective barrier against air and moisture, helping to prevent mould and cracking while also extending the floor’s lifespan. Routine maintenance is equally important. Always keep the floor clean and dry—after mopping, use a dry cloth to wipe the surface again to minimise the chance of mould growth.
For walls, applying anti-moisture paint is an effective way to prevent mould. Another good option is installing tiles, which are easier to clean if mould does appear. However, pay attention to the grout lines between tiles, as they can easily trap dirt and moisture.
In the event that mould grows on walls, there are simple ways to remove it. One method is to spray a 1:99 diluted household bleach solution on the affected area and wipe it clean with a cloth. Alternatively, mix baking soda, white vinegar, and water in a 1:1:2 ratio, spray it on the mouldy area, and wipe it off.
For the best results in reducing humidity, a dehumidifier is essential. Dehumidifiers effectively extract moisture from the air, creating a drier indoor environment and preventing dampness. However, they do have drawbacks. The water tank requires frequent emptying, and running the machine continuously can lead to higher electricity bills.
